Hey, it's Ryan. This week's test might be the simplest one in the whole series, and also the easiest to get wrong without noticing. The video walks you through the one-week self-test. Here's the actual study behind it, the honest gap between what researchers measured and what you're about to count yourself, and one thing worth fixing before you start counting nights.

Set your alarm for tomorrow morning, then check it against Saturday's. If they don't match, you're running two schedules a week, whether you meant to or not. Researchers have a name for that gap: social jetlag.

That's the hook of this week's video, and the research behind it is real: a study tracking almost 61,000 adults for close to eight years found the most consistent sleepers had up to a 48% lower risk of dying from any cause than the least consistent, even after accounting for how many hours they actually slept. Not how many hours. How steady those hours were.

Sleep, published 21 September 2023. DOI 10.1093/sleep/zsad253. n = 60,977 UK Biobank participants, sleep-wake timing tracked by wearable accelerometer, not self-report, for up to 7.8 years.

The numbers. Higher sleep regularity was linked to a 20% to 48% lower risk of all-cause mortality across the top four regularity quintiles versus the least-regular quintile, adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, and lifestyle and health factors. Regularity outpredicted duration even in models that controlled for total sleep time.

The honest gap. This study measured timing regularity with a wearable. The self-test in the video asks how many nights you land in a seven to nine hour window, a simpler, practical stand-in built on the same underlying finding, sameness night to night, not a literal equivalent to the instrument researchers used.

One more honest note. A person could hit the hours most nights while still shifting their whole schedule around, or hold a steady schedule on fewer hours. The self-test is the doable version of the idea, not a direct substitute for what the study above actually measured.

Before you count nights. Set one alarm time, seven days a week, before you run the test, not after. Most phones still carry a separate weekday and weekend alarm. Delete the weekend one first. The test reads your reality more honestly with the anchor already in place than it does measuring a schedule you're about to change out from under it.
